Quarantine refers to restricting the movements of a person who has been exposed to an infectious disease but is not yet ill.  Thus a person who has been in contact with another person with smallpox might be ordered to stay home until the incubation period for smallpox has passed. That way the quarantined person will not expose anyone else if she/he becomes ill.  Quarantine could be legally imposed or self-imposed.  Quarantine is also used more generally to refer to orders that restrict movements (e.g. keeping an ill foodhandler off the job) or that keep all persons out of certain premises (like the AMI building in Palm Beach County , FL, when it was contaminated with anthrax).

The term quarantine is often used, incorrectly, when the writer means isolation -- which refers to limiting the movements of a person who is ill with an infectious disease, e.g. in an isolation room at a hospital, or at home, in order to reduce transmission of infection from that person to others.
